What Ancient Historians Outside the Bible Said About Jesus
What Ancient Historians Outside the Bible Said About Jesus
Intro:
Some say the only reason we know about Jesus is because of the Bible. But what if even His enemies and outsiders confirmed His story? From Roman historians to Jewish texts, ancient writers left behind testimony that Jesus lived, was crucified, and left an undeniable mark on history.
Tacitus — The Roman Historian
Tacitus, one of Rome’s most respected historians, wrote in his Annals:
“Christus, from whom the name [Christians] had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus…”
Even Rome couldn’t erase Jesus.
Josephus — The Jewish Historian
Josephus, a first-century Jewish commander turned historian, mentioned Jesus in Antiquities of the Jews:
“Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man… He was the Christ; and when Pilate… condemned him to the cross… he appeared to them alive again the third day.”
Though debated in places, the core references are clear: Jesus was real, executed, and claimed alive again.
Suetonius — Biographer of Caesars
Suetonius wrote of disturbances caused by followers of “Chrestus” (widely accepted as Christ) during Emperor Claudius’s reign. Early Christians were shaking Rome even decades after Jesus.
Mara Bar-Serapion — A Syrian Philosopher
Writing to his son, Mara Bar-Serapion compared Jesus to Socrates and Pythagoras:
“What advantage did the Jews gain from executing their wise king?… Nor did the wise king die altogether; he lived on in the teaching which he had given.”
Even non-believers saw Jesus as a teacher whose influence outlived death.
The Babylonian Talmud — Hostile Acknowledgment
The Talmud, a Jewish text hostile to Christianity, still referred to Jesus as a sorcerer. Ironically, in trying to discredit Him, it confirmed His supernatural works.
Conclusion:
These weren’t Christian fanatics writing propaganda. They were outsiders, skeptics, even enemies. Yet they still acknowledged Jesus and His impact. For faith-driven investors, this is like outside auditors confirming your records — even those who don’t like you can’t deny the facts.
